Quick answer

Can neon tetras live with a betta?

Often, yes. Neon tetras are one of the more reliable betta tankmates, as long as the tank holds at least 20 gallons (75 litres), is well planted, and is kept at 24–26 °C, where the temperature ranges of both species overlap. Watch the first week closely: most bettas ignore a school of neons, but some individuals chase small fish and a few won't accept any tankmates.

The match works because the two fish live differently. Bettas spend most of their time near the surface, while neon tetras school in the middle of the water. Neons are not fin-nippers, so they leave the betta's long fins alone, and they are fast enough to get out of the way. The main risks are a territorial betta that hunts small fish, and a tank too small for the neons to keep their distance. A betta is happy alone in 19 litres (5 gallons), but a school of neons needs much more room, which is why the shared tank should be 20 gallons or more.

Set the tank up for both: dense plants and some floating plants break up sightlines and give the betta resting spots near the surface, while open water in the middle lets the neons school. Keep a group of at least six neon tetras, ideally 8–10, so they feel secure and stay together; a small group is more likely to scatter and draw the betta's attention. Both prefer soft to medium water with a pH around 6–7.2.

Add the neons first and the betta last, so the betta enters a tank where the school is already settled. If the betta flares constantly, chases or damages the tetras, separate them; it is a personality issue, not something you can fix. Our stocking calculator flags bettas as territorial whenever you add tankmates. That is a reminder to watch them, not a rule that they can't share a tank.

Frequently asked questions

What size tank do I need for a betta and neon tetras?
At least 20 US gallons (75 litres), ideally a long tank, so a school of 8–10 neons has room to swim away from the betta. Smaller tanks can work with some bettas, but the risk of stress and chasing rises sharply.
How many neon tetras should I keep with a betta?
A school of at least six, ideally 8–10. A larger group is calmer and stays together, which makes the betta less likely to target individual fish.
What are better tankmates for a betta than neon tetras?
In smaller tanks, snails such as nerites and mystery snails, or a small group of pygmy corydoras, are safer choices. In 20 gallons or more, ember tetras, harlequin rasboras and corydoras are also good options. Avoid fin-nippers such as tiger barbs and serpae tetras, and other long-finned fish such as fancy guppies.
